The mystical Styx waterfall
- Kalavrita – Helmos
- 8h
- From €72,-
The mythical waterfall of Styx is by itself a motive for doing this hike.In Greek mythology, Styx forms the boundary between the living and the Underworld, where the god of the dead, Hades, rules. According to some versions, Styx had miraculous powers and could make someone invulnerable. The Trojan hero Achilles was dipped in the waters of the river by his mother, Thetis, during his childhood, acquiring invulnerability, with exception of his heel, by which his mother held him. The only spot where Achilles was vulnerable was therefore that heel, where he was struck and killed by Paris’s arrow during the Trojan War. This is the source of the expression Achilles’ heel, a metaphor for a vulnerable spot. Alexander the Great is said to have been killed by the river’s poisonous waters. The most sacred oath among the ancient Greeks, which not even the gods could violate, was the oath to “Styx’s black water”. At present times locals call Styx ”Mavroneri” (= black water).
The sight of the waterfall that shatters its magical waters from 300m (984ft) high is astonishing. We can continue to the top at 2355m (7726ft) and descent towards the ski resort through the ridge of Neradorachi (=back of the fairy). The 700 meters (2296ft) of vertical rock below and the view will leave you speechless.
