The old connection paths! Prastos – Kastanitsa at mount Parnonas

  • Mount – Parnonas
  • 4h
  • Ab €48,-

An interesting hike through the old path that connects the village Prastos with the village Kastanitsa on the eastern side of Mt. Parnonas. Those two villages are located in an area called Tsakonia. This is an area of wild beauty that until recently was isolated. That’s the reason why the villages have maintained their traditional style. The inhabitants still speak a peculiar dialect, Tsakonika, which originates from the ancient Dorian dialect. The same roots have the inhabitants, the so called Tsakones (= From Tsakonia), that originate from the ancients Spartans. People proud and independent, abandoned the Spartan region many centuries ago and settled in this wild place to preserve their independence from all sorts of conquerors. Kastanitsa is considered one of the most beautiful traditional villages in Greece. There, one should not miss out on the delicious chestnut-based food served at the village tavern. In the highlights of of the hike is the crossing of the chestnut tree forest over Kastanitsa, which is especially magical during Autumn.
